Director’s statement
I moved to Tallinn in 2017 and visited the Tallinn Botanic Garden. I found the garden’s retro-futuristic architecture appealing, but soon something else took my attention; small, white insects crawling all over the place. After chatting with the gardeners I learnt that the insect was a resilient pest that had been bugging the garden for years. I started observing the garden’s pest control program - monthly cryptobug imports and annual poisoning against the pests. Two years later I decided to make my bachelor thesis film about the topic.
In the film I wanted to portrait our neurotic attempts to rule everything around us, and how our insignificant looking actions can affect nature and other species when looking at it on another level. I didn’t want the film to be a story of this specific botanical garden and it’s pest control program, but a visual angle on a wider phenomenon that we all play a part in.
