A story about a boy who does not speak. He is sent to an island-polygon, to the former colonial missionary Jakub to be cured. Jakub is the only inhabitant on the island; he has to make observations during the nightly bomb raids and report the results. His observation post is in the tower of the ruined church where Jakub makes silage. Missionary – his old horse – tramples on the silage, there are beehives downstairs, and an organ where Jakub plays and sings hymns while the boy works the bellows. At home in an old hangar he translates Virgil’s “Georgics” from Latin into Swahili, so that he could take it to masai people in Africa. “And then comes joy… and peace… and wealth too…

Quiet Tarkovskian drama about an old man who lives alone on a deserted island which the Soviet fighter planes use for nighttime target practicing. A young mute boy is sent from the mainland to keep him company. Both are haunted by memories, the boy about his mother and the old man about his younger days as a missionary in Africa.
