Documentary about folk singer Virve Järsumägi, also known as Virve of Kihnu, and about the passing of folklore heritage from one generation to another.

Virve Elfriide Köster alias Virve Järsumägi lives in a small island of Kihnu. She has a gift to create songs that reflect life surrounding her. Just like the island is surrounded by the sea, Virve's songs also talk about the sea. Virve sings the sea to the heart of the audience. Virve is an elderly woman who has been through thick and thin; now she leaves her songs to a young woman who inherits Virve's creative work and teaches her songs to small children. Songs will always remain, even if people disappear.

Three-act documentary essay directed by Lennart Meri about memory and the historical cultural connections between the Finno-Ugric peoples.

The documentary is divided into three parts: the first part has been dedicated to ancient bearers of memory such as Karelian rock paintings, poetry of Kalevala, the Khanti bear funeral ceremony. Taking a tour in the past has been interwoven with mythical ancient history, yet drawing parallels with today's society. In the second part Lennart Meri tells about Finnish folklore collector Elias Lönnrot's trip to Estonia and his meetings with Estonian intellectuals in 1844. Estonian Film Database (EFDB)

The database is maintained by NGO Estonian Film Database. It was opened on 12.12.2012 and is meant for providing information about the whole Estonian film heritage from 1912. We plan fully complete it by 2025 but already now full and partial entries for about 20 000 films, 27 000 filmmakers, and more than 200 production companies could be retrieved in Estonian and partly in English. Translation of film descriptions and keywords into English is ongoing but due to the scarcity of resources quite a slow process. Read more detailed overview.
