Interview with choirmaster Roman Toi, also an alumnus of fraternity "Vironia", held in Tallinn on July 21st, 2011.

Young members of fraternity "Vironia" hold an interview with choirmaster and alumnus of fraternity "Vironia" Roman Toi. They talk about the activity and social life of fraternities and sororities in 1930s. Roman Toi recalls fellow students from Jakob Westholm Upper Secondary School who all except one joined a fraternity. Roman Toi joined "Vironia" fraternity when he studied at the University of Tartu in 1936. He says that military service was highly appreciated in the fraternity. Portrait documentary about cameraman Semyon Shkolnikov and the Soviet era that he filmed.

Semyon Shkolnikov (b. 1918), cameraman of film chronicles and documentaries, started his career in the field of filmmaking as a war front cameraman. In 1948 he started to work for Tallinn Kinostuudio (later known as Tallinnfilm), Estonia. He was a member of crew working with 377 cinema newsreels "Soviet Estonia"; as a director he has completed 60 documentaries. Semjon Školnikovi meenutuste vahele on pikitud rohkelt arhiivikaadreid, mis annavad pildi operaatorist endast kui ka nõukogude ajastust, mida ta filmis.

The first feature film directed independently by Grigori Kromanov is based on the novel "The Case of Andres Lapeteus" by Paul Kuusberg. According to the director, the film is telling about human responsibility, conscience and staying who you are even in most complicated conditions.

After a long night with his old fellow fighters, Andres Lapeteus regains consciousness in the hospital. How has confusion, bewilderment and alienation developed between those men who once fought together side by side? Is this the inevitable result of the Stalinist regime, the influence of his parvenue wife, or the effect of his personal cowardliness and conformism? Estonian Film Database (EFDB)

The database is maintained by NGO Estonian Film Database. It was opened on 12.12.2012 and is meant for providing information about the whole Estonian film heritage from 1912. We plan fully complete it by 2025 but already now full and partial entries for about 20 000 films, 27 000 filmmakers, and more than 200 production companies could be retrieved in Estonian and partly in English. Translation of film descriptions and keywords into English is ongoing but due to the scarcity of resources quite a slow process. Read more detailed overview.
