The Life of a Coastal Fisherman

Documentary by Riho Västrik about the fishermen of Peerni, Manija and Kihnu islands, about the short season of Baltic herring fishing and the strict quotas.

The Baltic herring catching season lasts only a month. Fishing quotas are issued for joint use for fishermen - so every lost hour means smaller income. Fishermen themselves compare the situation with an olympic running contest: when the start is given there won't be any mercy before crossing the finish line. During the short fishing season fishermen work their fingers to the bone. When the fishermen finally get the phone call saying that the quota is exceeded and it is forbidden to catch more fish, they are not sure whether to laugh or to cry.

Juulius gets to know the daily life in the fisherman's village, falls in love for the first time, and realizes the complexity of the relationships between those of older generation. While leaving for a stormy sea of life from the village he has still some hope in order to come back to his love and his home port.

Voiceover by actress Kersti Kreismann who reads Vaarandi's poetry. The film directed by Veljo Käsper is based on the novel "The Seven Days of Tuisu Taavi" by Einar Maasik.

Taavi is worried about the lack of wind that won't let him do his daily job as a fisherman. Neither he nor other fishermen like that the fisheries inspector Olev has banned using motorboats on the lake, because of the possible injuries of fingerlings. Taavi is also concerned of the fact that Olev is often seen together with nurse Leili whom Taavi holds dear. But he is definitely not the guy who would just sit and wait for the better days.
