A boy lives with his mother in a lonely farmhouse amidst the woods. Now and then he goes to see his father who is in prison and the two of them share a common secret. Their life will change the day when a stranger arrives at their house, carrying a letter from the boy's father and being wounded by a bullet. Through the eyes of the silent boy we see the way life changes, the way spring becomes winter and the way hope develops to betrayal.

Livonians are among the smallest Finno-Ugric nations still existing today. They are the closest kindred people to Estonians and Livonian language is the closest one to Estonian language. Despite the war, deportations, collectivization, distrainment and other crimes agains humanity Karl never joined the collective farm. He was terrorized, abused and imprisoned but he remained true to himself. Karl tells the story of his difficult yet independent life and his silent yet consistent resistance to the Soviet order.
