The war drama directed by Jüri Müür is based on the novel "The Two Selves of Enn Kalm" by Paul Kuusberg. It is the first, and so far the only Estonian feature film depicting the Estonian Rifle Corps in the World War II, including the forming process of the corps in the Urals, its battles held at Velikiye Luki, on Emajõgi River and the night battle of Tehumardi on Saaremaa island. Considering the year of the film, it is not free from propaganda; however, for the first time bold and epic battle scenes together with the war chronicles are presented in this film. The soundtrack "Song About the Faraway Home" (music by Eino Tamberg, lyrics by Ralf Parve) is still a popular soldier song today.

After being mobilized to the Red Army and their hard experience in the battalions, Estonian soldiers are formed into the Estonian Rifle Corps. Many of them, including Enn Kalm, lack motivation to fight. On their long way back to homeland and during the battles at Velikiye Luki, the Estonian men will recover their strength and realize the idea of fighting. On the banks of Emajõgi River, Enn and his fellow soldiers have to face their compatriots who wear the enemy's uniform. Amateur feature film produced in 1963, co-financed by the expatriate Estonians living in Canada and based on Eerik Heine’s original script. The film portrays conditions in Estonia during 1946-1947, fight of the ‘forest brothers’ with the occupying forces and worry towards the outburst of the next war, mixed with the hope to restore the independence of the Republic of Estonia.

In 1946-47, a group of resistance fighters led by captain Lembit Mõtus hide in a bunker of the ’forest brothers’, waiting for liberation of Estonia and struggle with local Soviet authorities. After a rape attempt in the woods, Lembit's pretty bride Linda moves to live with the ’forest brothers’. Local fellow villager working at railway informs them about the arriving train transporting money. They rob the train and decide to share the million Roublesa the with hundred neighbouring farms for paying compulsory taxes. Villager Endel, forest warden Juhan and his wife Maali get killed in the battle.

Two proud fisherman families live on a very small island in Estonia. The two fishermen have always bore a grudge against each other. Their stubbornness and disobedience to German occupiers leads to dramatic events where staying alive is worse than death. Since it is impossible to escape public contempt, they have to decide how to redeem themselves.

Life in a Citadel

The first feature film produced in the Soviet Republic of Estonia, directed by Herbert Rappaport from Lenfilm production company. It is based on the play "Life in a Citadel" by August Jakobson and was awarded with the Stalin Prize. The film features many leading Estonian film actors of that time.

Professor August Miilas has succeeded in hiding in his private house from the war. He thinks this is mainly caused by his complete devotion to science. As August is not interested in anything that is going on outside his citadel, his family members avoid disturbing him. However, the political situation disrupt August's quietude. Right in the middle of his domestic citadel, the professor finds out about dangerous secrets so that he must give up this apolitical attitude and open up for the new reality.

The debut feature film by Theodor Luts who himself took part in the Estonian War of Independence. It is the first Estonian war film that depicts young men from all over Estonia fighting for the freedom of their fatherland. The silent film consists of numerous spectacular battle scenes.

This Estonian feature film is among the few films produced before 1940 that have been almost fully preserved. Three young men have become friends during the times of the Estonian War of Independence. While fighting for their fatherland, they experience both hazardous and romantic moments without losing their bravery, coolheadedness and sense of humour. The film is full of epic battle scenes, patriotism and pathos. „Young Eagles“ was digitally remastered and returned to the big screen in 2007 accompanied by the specially compiled background music.
