Three-act documentary essay directed by Lennart Meri about memory and the historical cultural connections between the Finno-Ugric peoples.

The documentary is divided into three parts: the first part has been dedicated to ancient bearers of memory such as Karelian rock paintings, poetry of Kalevala, the Khanti bear funeral ceremony. Taking a tour in the past has been interwoven with mythical ancient history, yet drawing parallels with today's society. In the second part Lennart Meri tells about Finnish folklore collector Elias Lönnrot's trip to Estonia and his meetings with Estonian intellectuals in 1844. The sequel to „The Waterfowl People“. The author of the film interprets the kinship, linguistic and cultural relations of the Finno-Ugric peoples. Finns, Vepsians, Votes, Setos, Erzya-Mordvinians, Mansis, Hungarians, Sámi, Nganasans and Estonians appear in the film. The film was shot in 1977 on locations in northern Finland, Sámi, Vepsia, Votia, Mordovia, Khantia-Mansia, Hungary, the Taymyr Peninsula, Setomaa region in Estonia and in Saaremaa and Muhu islands, Estonia. Some footage was also filmed in Nenetsia in 1970.

Estonian Film Database (EFDB)

The database is maintained by NGO Estonian Film Database. It was opened on 12.12.2012 and is meant for providing information about the whole Estonian film heritage from 1912. We plan fully complete it by 2025 but already now full and partial entries for about 20 000 films, 27 000 filmmakers, and more than 200 production companies could be retrieved in Estonian and partly in English. Translation of film descriptions and keywords into English is ongoing but due to the scarcity of resources quite a slow process. Read more detailed overview.
