The main subject of the history documentary is Patarei Prison - a unique architectural and historical building.

Tower, Bastille, Sing-Sing, Butyrka are all ominous buildings with rich history. The first Republic of Estonia that was established in February 1918 founded a central prison (that people started to call simply "Patarei") in the buildings of a former cannon battery of a sea fortress. During various eras both criminals and visionaries have been imprisoned here. Recollections of those who have been prisoners due to their worldview include the pieces of Estonian and European history in 20th century.

Semyon Shkolnikov (b. 1918), cameraman of film chronicles and documentaries, started his career in the field of filmmaking as a war front cameraman. In 1948 he started to work for Tallinn Kinostuudio (later known as Tallinnfilm), Estonia. He was a member of crew working with 377 cinema newsreels "Soviet Estonia"; as a director he has completed 60 documentaries. Semjon Školnikovi meenutuste vahele on pikitud rohkelt arhiivikaadreid, mis annavad pildi operaatorist endast kui ka nõukogude ajastust, mida ta filmis.

Instead of joining the collective farm, Karl Peterson chose threats, penalties, deportation and prison as he wanted to live as a free man in a free country.

Karl Peterson, an old farmer, lives alone in his poor house in a neglected village of Uus-Kiislova, Põlva county, where his household once bloomed. Despite the war, deportations, collectivization, distrainment and other crimes agains humanity Karl never joined the collective farm. He was terrorized, abused and imprisoned but he remained true to himself. Karl tells the story of his difficult yet independent life and his silent yet consistent resistance to the Soviet order.

The beginning

The third-graders of Tallinn 21st Secondary School before joining the Communist pioneer movement.

The staged documentary is a warm and heartfelt story about activities of third-graders at the beginning of 1970s. Teacher Helle Raigna and her pupils congratulate the birthday children at the 3rd grade in Tallinn 21st Secondary School. The pupils prepare for joining the Communist pioneer movement, so they have to study the rules first. The teacher has separate conversations with some of them discussing their behaviour. The filmmakers have recorded the colourful expressions of the children as well as the school milieu reminding of the atmosphere of Estonian parish school in late 19th entury.
