Documentary commissioned by the committee of construction of USSR introducing the Estonian national stone – limestone.

The scrutinous and compendious documentary introduces one of the most important natural resource in Estonia – the limestone – its origin, location, mining and use during the thousands of years. Estonian limestones – slate, dolomite rocks – have been in use as construction materials in Estonia already for the last 3000 years, standing as the second best construction materials next to wood. The filmmakers bring numerous examples about the use of limestone: starting from stone burials, stone fences and ending with the important colossal buildings in Estonian culture history. Comments by the screenwriter, publicist and construction historian Hubert Matve.

For his whole life Leonhard has lived in Meossaare manor where he has all his life collected and restored antiquity and searched for the right place for valuable items. Beautiful old pieces of furniture fills the hall of the manor - the old man himself puts up with puritan conditions and lives in a small kitchen. Estonian Film Database (EFDB)

The database is maintained by NGO Estonian Film Database. It was opened on 12.12.2012 and is meant for providing information about the whole Estonian film heritage from 1912. We plan fully complete it by 2025 but already now full and partial entries for about 20 000 films, 27 000 filmmakers, and more than 200 production companies could be retrieved in Estonian and partly in English. Translation of film descriptions and keywords into English is ongoing but due to the scarcity of resources quite a slow process. Read more detailed overview.
