Estonian filmmakers with the director of the documentary, Riho Västrik, repeated Alexander Theodor von Middendorff's expedition to the less known areas in Siberia.

Alexander Theodor von Middendorff (1815 – 1894), Russian scientist of Baltic German and Estonian origin, organized a scientific expedition to Taymyr Peninsula, the Northern end of Eurasia in 1842-1845. Century and a half later a group of Estonian scientists took the same route. The filmmakers faced the crisp arctic tundra with thousands of birds and wild reindeers and met the native people whose forefathers once gave directions to Middendorff in order to reach the Arctic Ocean.

„The Shaman“ was filmed on July 16, 1977 in the northernmost coast of Eurasia, on the Taymyr Peninsula, at the Avam River, simultaneously with the shooting of the documentary „The Winds of the Milky Way“. The Nganasan shaman Demnime (1913 ̶1980) was 64 years old at the time. The documentary about Demnime's incantation ritual was completed 20 years later.

Participants in the ceremony held at a Khanty summer camp included singers of old songs who travelled to the ritual place from several hundred kilometres away.

Three-act documentary essay directed by Lennart Meri about memory and the historical cultural connections between the Finno-Ugric peoples.

The documentary is divided into three parts: the first part has been dedicated to ancient bearers of memory such as Karelian rock paintings, poetry of Kalevala, the Khanti bear funeral ceremony. Taking a tour in the past has been interwoven with mythical ancient history, yet drawing parallels with today's society. In the second part Lennart Meri tells about Finnish folklore collector Elias Lönnrot's trip to Estonia and his meetings with Estonian intellectuals in 1844. The Ket people (formerly known as Yenissey Ostyak people), a small nation in Siberia, forms only a fragment of a nation in Krasnoyarsk Krai in 1980s (with the population of about 1000 people). It is known that these people habitated the territories already during the Paleozoic era. About half of the Ket people have started to live in Kellog village-like districts and their connections to their roots (natural way of living, fishery, nature religion, Shamanism) are disappearing.
