Shopping Centre (2023)

Original title in Estonian: Tsentrum

Students film Duration 07:42

Plot summary

Located in downtown Rakvere, the old Tsentrum shopping center is planned to be demolished, with a skyscraper set to rise in its place. Local life is bustling, with bronze statues in the urban space observing the emergence of new and larger buildings, hoping only that their view remains untouched. Tsentrum sprawls amidst all of this, serving as a home to all of Rakvere's pigeons. The deteriorating appearance of the building and the emptiness within do not bother these birds. They do not care that there's no queue at the main entrance, that the corridors are dusty, and the shop spaces, where locals once updated their wardrobes, now stand deserted. In addition to the pigeons, occasionally those who remember the building's former glory can be seen near the entrance. Locals still visit the fish market, whose doors have not yet closed. Perhaps, to them, the decaying building does not reflect emptiness but rather serves as a reminder of old memories. Tsentrum is a symbol of Rakvere's heart, reminding us that it is we who give life and meaning to places.
