The Balconies (2022)

Original title in Estonian: Rõdud

Students film | Drama Duration 09:10

Plot summary

The relationship between young partners suffers from gray everyday life. However, a mysterious exchange of flowers with the side balcony seems to be just what brings back the missing colour to their lives.

Marlen (Kristin Prits) stands on the balcony and looks sadly at the people passing by on the street, wishing that she could have a chance to live someone else's life for once. However, a neighbor dancing with moving boxes on the adjacent balcony brings a smile to his face, radiating energy and brilliance. A moment later, the girl's partner, Kaspar (Juhan Soon), arrives home. Marlen walks into the room bored, accuses the boy of wearing the same gray blouses every day, and locks herself in the bedroom. What she doesn't know is that Kaspar was going to give the girl a flower to smooth over the relationship. When a frustrated Kaspar goes to the balcony to calm down and notices a new neighbor girl on the next balcony, he leaves a flower in a vase between the two balconies because of a momentary emotion. The next morning, Marlen's mood is noticeably better. When he reaches the balcony, Kaspar notices that a new flower with a label has been placed against the vase. This is how Kaspar's secret relationship with the neighbor girl from the next balcony begins, or at least that's what he thinks. In the end, however, it turns out that the exchange took place between Kaspar and Marlen.
