Common Language (2019)

The film depicts family talks in an apartment in Vitsebsk, Belarus. The director is visiting her mother and father to talk about tough taboo topics. She asks questions about why she and her mother were never able to have a normal communication, whether her farther loves her and if having a normal happy family is still possible. The talks take place on the sofa in the living room. Filmed primarily with wide shot and closes ups. The entry scene starts from the empty sofa, later mother and daughter enter the room. One of the key scenes is a close up of mother and daughter on the pillow, lying together and talking about mother’s experiences with the father. The closing scene shows the entire family eating lunch in the kitchen. The TV set is on. Nobody speaks to each other.
