The tragedy written by August Kitzberg is set at the beginning of 19th century, during the era of slavery, according to the author. One late winter night, the Tammaru family is waiting their father to come back home. He has left to witness the execution of a witch. He arrives home, wolves howling in the forest, and tells the family how the witch's little daughter Tiina has run away to the forest during the execution.
