Between Two Worlds (2014)

Students film Duration 14:28

Plot summary

The film goes deeper in exploring the aspects that fascinated Dainis in this calm and seemingly even boring country life, revealing his silent, but sincere personality. The slow depiction of the nature is almost on the edge of being too slow, but the reason for that is to set the audience's mind in this slow flow of time, which the protagonist experiences, in such a way allowing the audience to identify with him or quite the opposite – make the viewers confused of the protagonist's choice to quit his career for the sake of such boring life. The static peace of the nature is contrasted by the everyday works of Dainis, showing how he builds sheds, drives his tractor or goes to hunt, exactly through work achieving a true fulfillment in life. We live in an age where the personal ego and career is the new god. Since the moment we are born we are told to be successful, to achieve our goals so that others can be proud of us.
Therefore it is confusing how a man, who is a successful soloist in the Latvian National Opera could throw that away just to dig the  ground, build a well and do other countryside works. But in the very end of this film the protagonist finally reveals his reasons, which in their simplicity and honesty confronts the viewer to revise his or her own values of this life.
