Kadri Kõusaar: I have always been fascinated by Patagonia, a paradise for poetic and lonely souls, in midst of industrial detritus and endless bleak landscapes... This truly is the end of the world... To quote Jean Baudrillard: “Behind the fantasy of Patagonia lies the myth of disappearance, of drowning in desolation, of the end of the world. Of course, this is just a metaphor. I can imagine that travelling to Patagonia is like reaching the limit of a concept, like getting to the end of things.”
One day my dreams became reality. An opportunity to travel to Patagonia emerged, thanks to CPH:LAB in Denmark, to make a no-budget short film in Argentina, together with the local director Maximiliano Schonfeld.
He had read an article in the local paper about a poor young man and woman who had mysteriously wandered in the Patagonian desert for a month, sleeping in abandoned farms or behind the bushes, and feeding on small animals and stolen groceries... Why did they embark on that journey? Who were they? We began to improvise and the result is “Auster”...
