- The Film is inspired by the Dovzhenko's short story “Mother”.
- The Film is dedicated to over 10 million civilians who died during Holodomor and WWII in Ukraine.

- 18 February turned out to be a symbolic day: on that day Dovzhenko completed his story which inspired the film, the Mother film team held a first shooting meeting, and the most dramatic events leading to mass-killings of Euromaidan protesters in the streets of Kyiv took its course which dramatically influenced the mood of the actors and crew during the shooting.
- Lembit Ulfsak was the director's first choice for the son's role but ultimately it was played by Aleksandr Ivashkevich, who, as it turned out, was of the Ukrainian origin, which was important for the story.
