A Life Dreamed, A Dream Lived (2018)

Original title in Estonian: "Prangli. Ilmsi ja ulmsi"

Students film Duration 22:06

Plot summary

A poetic portrait about a small island.

Prangli, a 6,44km2 functioning society, rests in the Gulf of Finland. During the off-season there’s a ferry to and from the island twice a day. It takes an hour to get to Prangli from the mainland, an hour to enter a different space-time, yet from the coast-line one can see the industrial buildings, towers and smoking chimneys of Muuga Harbour, the biggest cargo harbour in Estonia. This is what makes it special, it is not a remote island somewhere far away, it’s just there, so close and yet so far from the buzzling city. This contradiction is visually depicted in the film and becomes more apparent, considering that the seventy people who live on Prangli throughout the year are still (somewhat stubbornly) carrying on the values of bygone days, keeping the traditions alive and making this small society work. The assembly of the characters consists of a selection of the islanders. Most of whom are also connected to the premises, such as the harbour, school, church and a shop – locations that function both as significant elements of the historical evolvement of the island life as well as the unquestionable necessities of Prangli today. The other crucial character of the film is the weather. The film will portray the island through the interior and the exterior “rooms”, leading the viewer through a dream-like journey, introducing the islanders and their activities on the way, while trying to be respectful to the invisible borders that remain between the newcomer and the secretive local.
