The main subject in Jaan Elken's (b. 1954, painter and professor of the painting department at the University of Tartu) work is modern urban environment; hyperrealistic motifs have been powerfully replaced by expressive abstract painting style. Elken's work belongs to several art collections as well as museum collections both in Estonia and abroad; it has been awarded with several prizes. His artwork is introduced through exhibitions held in 1997-1999, with the comments by art historian Harry Liivrand.
