Gori The Caricaturist (2023)

This film is an interweaving of documentary narrative and animation. The first, based on historical sources, conveys Gori's biography, world events, and mediates the press and political life of the republican time. It moves along historical facts, is initially easy and fun, and in the end cruel and ruthless. Since there are no living witnesses from this era, nor are there biographers of Gori, the direct sources are photographs, old film clips, newspaper articles, sound recordings, letters and drawings. These are supported by historians and experts with their knowledge of life between the wars, the modernisation of Estonian society, the development of journalism, the psychology and talent of the artist and the assumptions regarding Gori's motives the excerpts from the interviews are entwined by the voice-over, which controls the course of the narration and can occasionally sound cynical, tasked with uniting the real historical world and the imaginary world of Gori's work.
The other, the world of animated caricatures, is the creation of the main character. It inevitably grows out of the first, but begins a life of its own according to its own rules. The thread-pullers and controllers of the real world become these small and tedious characters who can always be played against each other.
