Martsoo was lucky to get from Moscow to Estonia thanks to a friendly militiaman. In his homeland, Martsoo worked in Tori while repeatedly applying for a permission to travel to Sweden in order to see his family. He finally got the permission in 1961. Then he traveled to Leningrad and from there took a plane to Helsinki. In Sweden a German doctor visited him, they had been together in the prison camp in Siberia.
