Lucavsala (2014)

Lucavsala (Lutsusaar) is an island in almost central Riga, in the middle of the River Daugava. In 1930s, there were farm houses and herds of cows in the island. After the war the island was divided into gardening lots for the workers of Soviet big industries. The spontaneous life and activities in the gardening cooperative in Lucavsala is opening up through the humorous details and contrasts. The protagonist Rasma, a 76-year-old self-initiated chairwoman of the gardening cooperative, checks the maintenance in the island, reprimands the lazy ones and the drunkards, collects taxes and pokes her nose into other people's matters. But now the real estate developers want to turn the island into a tourist attraction and both the retired people and the hippies must leave – but they fiercely fight against the fact that the island won't become another Las Vegas.
