Liivo Niglas portrays Juri Vella, a Nenets of West Siberia, who has returned to reindeer herding in order to escape the expanding civilization.

Nenets Juri Vella is a social activist and writer living in West Siberia who wants to escape the attack of Western civilization and has created his own world. Ten years ago he left his village to go to taiga and become a reindeer breeder. He founded a reindeer farm including both a winter and summer camp and started to live there together with his oldest daughter's family. In order to save his grandchildren from the social and psychic problems, Juri has also established a school in the winter camp where two teachers work with five children.

„The Shaman“ was filmed on July 16, 1977 in the northernmost coast of Eurasia, on the Taymyr Peninsula, at the Avam River, simultaneously with the shooting of the documentary „The Winds of the Milky Way“. The Nganasan shaman Demnime (1913 ̶1980) was 64 years old at the time. The documentary about Demnime's incantation ritual was completed 20 years later.

An ancient Khanty bear feast ritual, estimated to be about 3000 years old, was filmed in Western Siberia, in Khantia-Mansia, at the Agan River, a tributary of the Ob, in September 1985 and in August 1988. Participants in the ceremony held at a Khanty summer camp included singers of old songs who travelled to the ritual place from several hundred kilometres away.

The Ket people (formerly known as Yenissey Ostyak people), a small nation in Siberia, forms only a fragment of a nation in Krasnoyarsk Krai in 1980s (with the population of about 1000 people). It is known that these people habitated the territories already during the Paleozoic era. About half of the Ket people have started to live in Kellog village-like districts and their connections to their roots (natural way of living, fishery, nature religion, Shamanism) are disappearing.

Estonian Film Database (EFDB)

The database is maintained by NGO Estonian Film Database. It was opened on 12.12.2012 and is meant for providing information about the whole Estonian film heritage from 1912. We plan fully complete it by 2025 but already now full and partial entries for about 20 000 films, 27 000 filmmakers, and more than 200 production companies could be retrieved in Estonian and partly in English.
