Documentary film “Mercato" takes the viewer into one of the world’s poorest counties, Ethiopia. In the largest open air market in Africa, we follow the most ordinary working day of 10 year old shoe shine boys, wood-carrying ladies, an arrogant messenger and a well educated tourist guide.

Abebe and Ashenafi are ordinary 10-year old boys, whose parents sent them to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to work as shoe shine boys so the family would not starve. Abtu is an orphan teenager and works as a talalaki or a messenger, but work is the least on his mind. Bertukan is a mother of three. Andres Sööt, a legendary documentary filmmaker in Estonia, records the environments and people in Tallinn cafes with his candid camera in late 1960s.

The film introduces a selection of various guest types in cafes and night clubs in late 1960s when old ladies still had some bourgeois manners from the first republic of Estonia and the youngsters of the Soviet regime were not served in a restaurant if they had no proper clothing. The guests of Tallinn's legendary cafes "Pearl" and "Moscow" were filmed in their own time. The uniqueness of the film is expressed through a strangely independent soundtrack that observes everyday bustle from the heights of melancholy poetry and remote uranography. Artur Alliksaar's poetry is read by Aarne Üksküla.

Estonian Film Database (EFDB)

The database is maintained by NGO Estonian Film Database. It was opened on 12.12.2012 and is meant for providing information about the whole Estonian film heritage from 1912. We plan fully complete it by 2025 but already now full and partial entries for about 20 000 films, 27 000 filmmakers, and more than 200 production companies could be retrieved in Estonian and partly in English. Translation of film descriptions and keywords into English is ongoing but due to the scarcity of resources quite a slow process. Read more detailed overview.
