75 years ago young enthusiast Helju Mikkel (later known as Memm) brought together a group of students who were interested in folk arts. They started to study and perform old Estonian folk songs and dances and thus founded one of the oldest performance groups in Estonia: University of Tartu Folk Dance Ensemble. Documentary commissioned by the Ministers' Council of Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic about the 20th Song and Dance Festival dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the victory of the Great Patriotic War and the 45th anniversary of Estonian SSR. The film shows the emotional moments during the preparation phase of the festival, its colourful procession and the festival itself, the honoring ceremony of the choirmasters and dance masters. Maestro Gustav Ernesaks contemplates on the phenomenon of Estonian song festival tradition.

Estonian Film Database (EFDB)

The database is maintained by NGO Estonian Film Database. It was opened on 12.12.2012 and is meant for providing information about the whole Estonian film heritage from 1912. We plan fully complete it by 2025 but already now full and partial entries for about 20 000 films, 27 000 filmmakers, and more than 200 production companies could be retrieved in Estonian and partly in English. Translation of film descriptions and keywords into English is ongoing but due to the scarcity of resources quite a slow process. Read more detailed overview.
