The Life of a Coastal Fisherman

Documentary by Riho Västrik about the fishermen of Peerni, Manija and Kihnu islands, about the short season of Baltic herring fishing and the strict quotas.

The Baltic herring catching season lasts only a month. Fishing quotas are issued for joint use for fishermen - so every lost hour means smaller income. Fishermen themselves compare the situation with an olympic running contest: when the start is given there won't be any mercy before crossing the finish line. During the short fishing season fishermen work their fingers to the bone. When the fishermen finally get the phone call saying that the quota is exceeded and it is forbidden to catch more fish, they are not sure whether to laugh or to cry.

Figuratively speaking, every resident of Tallinn is in direct contact with the lake through their tap - drinking water has been taken from the lake already since 14th century. The prohibited zone around the lake makes the territory a valuable natural environment for birds, animals and fish who have to compete with airplanes.

The drama directed by Veiko Õunpuu is based on the novel "Autumn Ball" by Mati Unt, telling the story about the residents of a dormitory suburb who are more or less connected to each other. All of them suffer from loneliness and complicated relationships. This is Õunpuu's first full-length feature film that has received several acknowledged festival awards and was chosen the best Estonian film of the last 20 years.

According to the director of the film, Veiko Õunpuu, "Autumn Ball" tells about seclusion, lack of contact and inability to reach other people. At the same time, there is humour and absurd in the film; it is possible that some people among the audience can have a really good laugh. When speaking about the genre of the film, it can be said that "Autumn Ball" is a pitch-black comedy about solitude, despair and hopelessness.

The filmmakers follow the process of elections, they talk to the politicians and presidential candidates and discuss the problems that our small country is facing and will face.

The basis for the dynamic community of the European Union is the harmonization of certain rules. This applies to preservation of nature as well, and thus we hear more and more about the mysterious Natura 2000. Natura 2000 is a Europe-wide network of nature preserves, consisting of bird preserves and nature preserves. A large part of the existing preserves in Estonia fit surprisingly easily into Natura 2000. The film shows the types of habitats in western Estonia, because it was here that the pilot project for Natura 2000 was launched. This land is many thousands of years younger than the inland – even now the earth’s crust is rising here and the land being born from the ocean – Terra Maritima – has a thousand faces. In addition to the coastline, the film introduces various types of meadows - all very valuable habitats.

The feature film is an Estonian-Polish co-production directed by Polish filmmaker Marek Piestrak. It tells about the struggle against an evil conspiracy in Estonia in August 1939.

In 1939, once again Preimann, a Baltic German baron, and Leppikson, a native Estonian, confront each other in Estonia. In this game evil forces arise - Soviet counterintelligence, the diplomacy of the Fascist Germany, involuntary dreams and black magic, satanists and traitors. The evil forces are opposed by the courage and love between Polish writer Joanna and Estonian detective Gunnar. Will they succeed in preventing a magic ritual where the Satan itself is being invited? Will this be enough in order to save Europe from the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact?
