On August 23, 1989 the Baltic Way was formed – a 600-kilometre-long human chain from Tallinn through Riga to Vilnius.

On the 50th anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact (August 23rd, 1989), a non-violent protest action was organized called the Baltic Way that aimed at directing the world's attention to the attempts of the Baltic States to regain independence. Around two million people held hands in a 600-kilometres-long human chain through the Baltic states, while expressing their unity for becoming free countries.
