Plot summary

1. Three jovial and slightly drunk university students have gathered around a farmhouse table and are half-listening to the unbelievable hunting stories of their landlord. The farmer does his best to hold the attention of his public and gain their respect, but the students find him laughable. An abnormally noisy fly interrupts the farmer's story and has soon secured everyone's attention. The students start hunting down the fly with the eagerness and tension only matched by the farmer's excitement about his own hunting experiences. As the fly quietly lands on the samovar, the students are close to catching it. Suddenly the clock strikes and the men are awoken from their trance. The fly gets away.

2. Drunk Viktor has just come back from a hunt and is now telling his friend about the dog-sized duck he saw. Viktor talks about it seriously, but the others, also drunk, find it rather funny. One of the men goes a bit too far with joking and Viktor gets angry at him. Looks like it's going to be a fight. But before fists are used, Viktor loses his balance and falls to his feet. The men are shocked as Viktor does not regain consciousness. The joker Viktor lets his friends fry for a moment and then gets up laughing. And the party continues.

3. Students sit around the table and drink. They have just come from the city to spend summertime in the village. The red-headed old man, the owner of the house, tells them his hunting tales. He waves his hands to explain something and prove that he is telling the truth. The guys just make fun of him and send him to fetch more drinks. While the old man is away, they quickly pack up and leave to find girls. The old man returns, and finding that no one is there, continues to tell his tales to the dog.

4. Viktor gets back from a hunting trip and is absolutely terrified. He claims to have come face to face with a horrifying beast and just barely escaped with his life. Unfortunately the only people listening to him are his three drunk sons, who have a hard time believing their father’s insane tale, mocking him mercilessly. The more angry and desperate Viktor gets, the more fun the sons are having.Viktor understands that he is getting no help from his three dullard sons and he grabs a hunting rifle, preparing to face the creature once again. Sadly he isn’t as ready as he thought, as only a glance at the approaching beast causes his heart to give up and Viktor falls dead on the ground. Two of his sons realize that something serious has happened, but the third keeps on having a good time, not understanding the gravity of the situation they’re in.
Suddenly the roar of a gigantic bear can be heard from outside. The two sons kneeling next to their father’s lifeless body are stunned into silence, while the third son looks outside and only sees a “teddy”...

5. A man tells some drunken peasants about how a big bear attacked him while he was out hunting, how he had a duel with the bear and ended up winning. The peasants have a hard time believing the story, but the man’s detailed descriptions convince the peasants. They ask many questions and are amazed by the tale. The man tells the peasants that the bear is away near the forest and too heavy to carry alone. The peasants begin storming toward the forest. The man stays inside and eagerly waits for the peasants to get further and further. He then begins to grab all of the valuables from off the table including a precious samovar. Satisfied with all of the loot stolen, the man leaves, never to be seen again.

6. Freshly returned from the hunt, Viktor is telling his young listeners a story about him fighting a bear. As the three young lads get up from the table to take a look at Viktor ́s scar, one of them breaks a glass bottle by accident. Laughter and excitement turns to tension in a second and Viktor is aiming the lads with his rifle. Fortunately, the day is saved by Nikolai, who starts singing a well-known song and the party continues.
