Plot summary

Teresa Juksaar’s film „The King“ is based on a short story by Mehis Heinsaar and opens the theme of searching and finding inner peace. The film is a magical journey between the real and the imaginary world.

Olev Virkus (Aarne Soro) is a normal family man working as a clocksmith. But sometimes he needs to drop everything he’s doing and simply go away. That’s how Olev finds himself in the magical desert. When he returns home, his wife (Liis Karpov) knows exactly where he’s been. With his daughter (Luisa Lõhmus) also growing disgruntled with the mysterious trips, Olev decides to seek help for his condition. Despite this, after being ignored by his doctor (Maarika Vaarik-Soo) and failing to find help from literature, he once again succumbs to the desert. Over time his issues persist, forcing him out of the house even on Christmas Eve. With no help to be found, Olev seems to accept his fate.
However, one day at work, he’s approached by a young girl (Saskia Rebeka Vaarend). With seemingly simple but deeply honest suggestions, the girl pushes Olev in the right direction. He accepts her advice and from that moment onward, Olev can keep on living in peace.
