Under Control (2020)

Ville Koskinen's documentary on the problem of pests in nature. When nature is taking over the garden, humans won’t give up their attempts to keep the order.

Under Control focuses on the insect level and shows the effect of human actions on nature and other species. Botanical garden is an artificial nature-like installation where each room has its own microclimate. Despite the human attempts to control the environment, pests are spreading and eating the plants all over the garden. The gardeners fight against the pests with cryptobugs; thousands of ladybirds specially bred for killing and imported from abroad. But since the cryptobugs alone don’t solve the problem, they have to rely on the help of an exterminator. The fumigation causes death in the garden, but the pests appear resilient. As the remedies get harsher, the bystanders will have to face the consequences.
