The Brigade (2000)

Original title: Brigaad

Documentary Duration 57:00

This film takes place in the West-Siberian Arctic in the windy tundra of the Jamal Peninsula. The camera follows a group of indigenous migratory herders – the 7th brigade of the Jar-Sale sovkhoz – during the reindeer calving period. This is a hectic and laborious time for these herdsmen; often the survival of the newborn calves depends on their actions. The threats to the traditional ways of these indigenous people also become apparent. The film is given a rhythm by the brigade’s constant migration from one herding ground to the next.
