Plot summary

Film “Väljakutse” examines a difficult moral question if a person should donate an organ to save a beloved one from death, although he might be betrayed by her and puts his own life into danger.
The guy who faces that question is 24-years-old snowplough driver Rasmus (Rass), who collects money to continue his architecture studies. The story takes place during one weekend in a cold and dark Janruary in Tallinn. Rass and his girlfriend Noora exit from a cinema on a regular Friday evening. They laugh and discuss about film’s themes, which are cheating and jealousy.
Suddenly Noora crabs from her stomach as she feels pain. It passes soon and she wants to go to a party, but Rass is too tired from work. Noora complains that he doesn’t have time for her. Rass proposes to go to their “special place”, a garden of his granddad’s old house at Toompea, to cheer her up. They arrive and Rasmus talks about their future plans in that house. They start to have a snow war and greet his granddad. Rasmus and Noora start to build snowmen, but during that Noora receives a phone message and hides it from Rass. Later in the night they sit between two snowmen, and are about to go inside, when Noora suddenly collapses. Rass starts to call to the ambulance, but at the same time discovers a flirtatious message from Noora’s from, which is from a guy called Viktor. Ambulance takes Noora away. Rasmus waits nervously at the hospital’s corridor to get news about her condition, at the same time his bothered by that message. A nurse exits through the doors where doctors took Noora. She doesn’t have any news yet, and Rasmus is worried. Suddenly, his phone starts to ring. It’s his angry boss, who demands from Rasmus to arrive to work. Rasmus leaves from the hospital.
Rasmus drives with his car and reads that message again. He notices that there are more messages from a guy called Viktor. All of them are flirtatious and it seems that Noora might have an affair with that guy. After the arrival to a workplace, Rass makes a phone call to Viktor. Rass doesn’t talk, just listens. While being at work, Rasmus gets an emergency phone call from the hospital, after what he quits his job and leaves. Back at the hospital, he donates blood for Noora. He sees through the window of intensive care room how Noora gets a blood transfer and his sadness turns into a disappointment. The possible affair has occupied all his thoughts. Being at home, Rasmus tries to find out who is Viktor. He pours out all items from Noora’s purse and finds condoms together with a note written by Viktor. He goes to internet and searches Viktor from Noora’s friends list in a social network. He finds out that Viktor works in one bar, but can’t see his photos. He also discovers a long flirtatious messenger chat. Rasmus checks it and hurries to Viktor’s workplace. Rasmus sits in a bar and observes which one of the three waiters could be the guy. After finding it out, Rass starts to play a picky customer and terrorises Viktor from his table.

The situation culminates in a toilet, where the tension rises and suddenly Rasmus hits Viktor, yet gets interrupted by a phone call. He hears that Noora’s condition is critical and hurries to hospital. Rass hears from a doctor that Noora needs a new kidney within three hours or she will die. As there is no available donor, so the only one who could donate is shocked Rass. He exits from the hospital and sets up a meeting with Viktor. They confront each-other at the “special place” with two snowmen. Rasmus demands answers, but Viktor just throws punchy lines. Viktor leaves. Rass stays at the garden and talks with his granddad, who advises not to donate. Back at the hospital, Rass sits in Noora’s room and has an emotional breakdown. It’s time to make a final decision.
