During thirty years, sculptor Jaan Vares (1927) formed and polished the Estonian State Art Institute into a well-functioning mechanism where under the guidance of best lecturers and teachers several generations of Estonian artists emerged. Despite the strict dictates and prohibitions of the Soviet era, Vares was wise enough to make advantage of these orientations in order to develop Estonian art and to complete his life's work. In addition, he was able to create a whole gallery of interesting portrait sculptures placed in his studio in Merivälja.
