Etude of a Prayer (2009)

Original title: Etüüd palvest

Documentary Duration 28:55

Plot summary

In the film Mother Riccarda speaks about the possible motives for joining the convent and brings out the main idea – there has to be a calling for joining the convent. A true calling. And there can’t be any problems left behind, a person has to be free. With this she disproves the myth of people joining the convent only as a result of shattered dreams or unhappy love. Lagle Parek gives an overview of the history of the convent in Pirita. She points out that Pirita is one of the first Brigettine convents built right after the main convent in Vadstena was finished and what is especially interesting is the phenomenal size of Pirita convent. The idea of living and being in a convent is most of all in prayers and praising God for which the habitants of a convent devote significant amount of time. Father Vello Salo expounds the essence of a prayer. Joining the convent does not mean one have to say farewell to thus world. It does mean giving up a lot. This can also be called as a sacrifice. You have sacrificed your life to God in return for what He has given us. As Mother Riccarda ensures, this new life is a happy and consecrated life. And of course if someone had a certain profession before joining the convent, they can continue that in the convent also, says Father Vello Salo. In the film we can see Sister Creszenzia, who was once a star of modern dance in India, teaching Indian dance now in the convent to Estonian girls.
