After seven years in a Soviet labor camp in Karaganda, the Estonian artist Ülo Sooster (1924‒1970) didn’t return to his homeland but settled in Moscow and became the most influential trend-setter for a whole generation of Soviet non-conformist artists.
In 1962 he exhibited his work Eye in the Egg at the anniversary art exhibition "30 Years of the Moscow Artists' Union" at Moscow Manege that later was a turning point in the acceptance of modern art. Filmmakers observe poetess Debora Vaarandi (1916–2007) in Pirita beach, on Toomemägi hill and in a cafe in Tartu, having a conversation with writers, behind her writing desk, knitting, talking to fishermen and visiting her birthplace in Saaremaa island. Voiceover by actress Kersti Kreismann who reads Vaarandi's poetry. Among other people seen in the film there are Aira Kaal, Ingrid Rüütel, Ralf Parve, Paul Kuusberg, Jaan Eilart, Vive Tolli, Lembit Remmelgas and Endel Nirk.

The documentary tells the story of Piirissaare island and its residents though Georgi Pankruhhin's point of view - he is a local medical assistant and a resident of Piirissaare who has lived there for about fifty years. Georgi thinks back to the times when there were ten times more residents, more children and even a school for them in Piirissaare. Currently, in the year of 1987, there are only elderly women and men living there who are still successfully growing onions.
