Twelve years after making the documentary "Woman of Kihnu" (1973), director Mark Soosaar films another documentary where the focus is on the male residents of Kihnu island. The right to organize their life has been taken away from Kihnu people: important decisions are made in the mainland, local culture is vanishing, social problems are getting worse. Local men are drinking vodka, become alcoholics, or die at sea. The filmmakers ruthlessly record situations that normally would not see any strangers as witnesses. Mark Soosaar made images of life move in fast motion. Hurrying people have been filmed in fast motion, the frames are mingled with more peaceful and better observable images of nature also filmed in fast motion. This contradiction clearly expresses the abyss between the man and eternal nature. Nature becomes sublime, the human being becomes an ant. However, human creation becomes monumental. Time won't move and always stays the same. TIme passes by and we are hurrying through time.

Estonian Film Database (EFDB)

The database is maintained by NGO Estonian Film Database. It was opened on 12.12.2012 and is meant for providing information about the whole Estonian film heritage from 1912. We plan fully complete it by 2025 but already now full and partial entries for about 20 000 films, 27 000 filmmakers, and more than 200 production companies could be retrieved in Estonian and partly in English. Translation of film descriptions and keywords into English is ongoing but due to the scarcity of resources quite a slow process. Read more detailed overview.
