An impoverished small town welcomes Claire Zachanassian who has left the place decades ago. Back then her name was Klaara, she was seventeen, destitute, and pregnant. Now as an old lady she has become a billionaire and everyone is hoping for her generosity. Claire offers the town a billion on condition that Alfred III, a respected citizen of the town, will be executed. Alfred is the father of their child and years ago he evaded responsibility with the help of false witnesses. The inhuman proposal of the old lady is disapproved by the town.
